Pre-Base Training: Foundational Preparation

Building the English and digital competencies teachers need for effective professional development

Before teachers can engage effectively with modern pedagogical approaches, many need to develop their English language competency and basic IT skills. Our Pre-Base Training programmes address these foundational needs, preparing teachers for success in our methodology training programmes.

English for Teachers (EFT)

English for Teachers develops language proficiency specifically for teaching contexts. Unlike general English courses, EFT focuses on the language teachers actually need: classroom management language, communicating lesson content effectively, providing constructive feedback to students, and engaging with English-medium professional development materials.

Programme Structure

EFT comprises four progressive levels, each running six months:

  • Pre-intermediate: Foundation language skills for classroom use
  • Intermediate: Expanded vocabulary and structures for instruction
  • Upper-intermediate: Confident classroom communication
  • Advanced: Professional-level English for teaching and training

Delivery Model

The programme uses a flipped classroom model where teachers work independently on grammar and vocabulary outside class time, whilst in-class sessions focus on practical application for teaching contexts. This approach maximises valuable face-to-face time for interactive practice and feedback.

Teachers engage in preparatory activities before each session and complete follow-up assignments that consolidate learning. The complete programme totals 190 hours of engagement per level, ensuring depth of learning beyond workshop attendance alone.

Progression Pathways

Teachers typically complete lower levels before Base Training (EPPS), building sufficient English proficiency to engage fully with methodology training. Higher levels (upper-intermediate and advanced) are accessible after Base Training through Professional Learning Communities, supporting continued language development alongside pedagogical growth.

Recognition

EFT is fully accredited by MoEYS within the national professional development framework, providing formal recognition of teachers’ language development.

IT for Teachers

IT for Teachers equips educators with essential digital competencies needed for 21st-century classrooms. The programme addresses a critical gap: many Cambodian teachers lack basic digital skills that are increasingly essential for effective teaching and professional development.

Programme Content

The programme covers widely-used applications essential for modern teaching:

  • Microsoft Word: Creating worksheets, lesson plans, and teaching materials
  • Microsoft Excel: Grade tracking, data management, and basic analysis
  • Microsoft PowerPoint: Creating engaging visual presentations for lessons
  • Microsoft Teams: Online collaboration and communication
  • Microsoft Forms: Creating quizzes and collecting student feedback
  • Outlook and OneDrive: Email communication and cloud-based file management

Delivery Model

This blended programme combines online self-paced learning with in-class activities. Teachers progress through modules flexibly, balancing independent work with collaborative sessions. Assessments confirm proficiency at each stage before progression.

Recognition

IT for Teachers is recognised by MoEYS within the national professional development framework. Full accreditation is currently under review.
